Friesian Horse Breed
The Friesian is a striking black baroque horse from the Netherlands — feathered legs, thick flowing mane, high-stepping trot — combining carriage-horse presence with a gentle, willing character.
One of Europe's oldest breeds, the Friesian nearly vanished twice before dedicated Dutch breeding revived it. Today the jet-black coat, feathered legs and animated trot make Friesians instantly recognizable — fixtures of film sets, exhibition rings and dressage arenas alike.
Despite the drama of their looks, Friesians are known as kind, people-oriented horses. They shine in dressage and combined driving, and their steady minds make them enjoyable pleasure mounts for riders who can sit a big, round-moving horse.
Buying notes: purebreds are registered with FHANA/KFPS, which inspects and grades breeding stock ("ster" and higher predicates add value). Feathered legs need routine care to prevent scratches (pastern dermatitis), and the breed's smaller gene pool makes it worth asking for the registry's inbreeding coefficient on breeding prospects.

Are Friesians always black?
Effectively yes for registered purebreds — black is the breed standard, with only a small star permitted in some registry classes. Chestnut occasionally occurs but is not accepted for breeding approval.
Are Friesians good for beginners?
Their temperament is famously gentle, but their size and big gaits take some riding fitness. A well-schooled, older Friesian can suit an ambitious novice with instruction.
